……….

Its such a pleasure to introduce this project as it’s not only a bloody good cause, it is a bloody CRAZY good opportunity to snap up affordable photographic art from some of our regions best!

A Bit More Soul began as a series of photographic retreats and over the years has come to represent a community of photographers, artists, poets and creative forces all bonded by their time spent together and being dedicated to nurturing, improving and mastering their passion.
I was lucky enough to attend and speak at their D’Urville Island retreat at the end of last year, and still, even now feel the positive effects of being included in the shared discussion, connection and feedback the group very regularly takes part in online.

So when one of their pivotal attendees and founding speakers suffered a personal tragedy just a few weeks ago, the group leapt into action! And the result is this AMAZING body of donated work made available to you at incredibly rare pricing. Most of these contributors are top of their respective photographic fields, they are professionals….but the work you see below is outside of “work”. Much of it is shot on film via personal projects, travels and just their own point of view!
This group includes some personal photographic heroes and respected friends of mine – I purchased my first piece within 2 minutes of getting the “we are live” email….and don’t think I am quite finished!

Take some time to browse the small selection I pulled below and click on through to explore the complete collection PLUS the sites of the contributing artists. Then decide if the small/large version will look best in your space. (That’s not really a question…bigger is always better!)

Get purchases done online before December 19 for Christmas delivery and YES Australians and beyond, you can get involved and own too!

Support local and support a family sideswiped so close to Christmas.

New things around these parts!

Atkinson family holiday action in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand // Photo by Julia Atkinson for Studio HomeMy “fresh new year” pic for effect!
…..

For 2015 we decided to take a fresh look at how Studio Home would work with the brands in our local design industry, the format and opportunities we offer them to have a valuable presence on the site AND how this would be presented in a way that is interesting and engaging to YOU!

It was time to shake things up a little!

We have made some basic tweaks to our format – for example, the sidebar going back to the left and a more obvious and easy to locate navigation bar. But the largest and most obvious change is the new “Powered by” bar !

Triumph + Disaster

POWERED BY

On a monthly basis we are now “Powered by” a singular brand – these are companies who want to align with the content we produce, the industry we support and are proud to display their logo as the only external one on our landing page. We treasure these partnerships as they help “power us” to continue the daily delivery of introductions to be explored and support our on going goals within the down under design community. They help us deliver what you want!

Big thanks to our debut champions – Triumph and Disaster!!

THE DIRECTORY

But where are the ads we used to browse down the side bar?
Oh they have moved into somewhere much roomier !!

By clicking on the “SHOP” banner in the sidebar and the top navigation bar you can now access a big juicy “visual mall” containing some of New Zealand and Australia’s most exciting brands and online stores!

Large linked tiles are supported by short introductions (often containing exclusive offers exclusive to Studio Home readers!) and up to three direct links to the stores own social media channels – something totally unique in the blog space at the moment and ultra convenient for you!
Please take some time to trawl and bookmark as a resource – this page has a growing collection of exciting stores with many newcomers who I think you will love.
I hope you enjoy our new clothes and understand our efforts to continue to let Studio Home go in its own direction!

Special special thanks needs to go to Mickey Ross of Micimage for his great work on the site and sidekick Sarah for being a general helpful hero!

Cheers,
Ju

Mons Royale SS 14/15

Mons Royale : SS 14/15 // versatile merino clothing // based in Wanaka, New Zealand - available online and from international stockists // Photography by Mickey Ross

Every season I normally bring you a wee tastess of the latest from Wanaka based merino brand; Mons Royale. Why you might wonder? I was bought up in a family that enjoyed “getting out there” eg. boating, adventuring, skiing…a general saturation of “outdoor time”!
In the early days it was all saggy, pilling polypropeline and fleece when it came to robust layers, then the magic of wool made a come back with its lovely breathable qualities but the style of the garments on offer was kind ofold and stuffy. That’s why the steady and exciting rise of Mons Royale is exciting and well deserved! Awesome active clothing, WITH a fun aesthetic and outrageously good durability.

Trust me…a merino layer in summer is amazing ! you can check out their summer offering and shop online here.

Junior’s

Junior's - a design blog for the parents down under. juniorsdesignblog.com - a Studio Home Project. Illustration by Emma Leonard. So for all of you Studio Home friends that avoid social media channels – its possible you have missed the very public fluster I got myself into as I launched a BRAND new blog last night!!
It’s become verrrry obvious to me over the last couple of years that as I grow older, so do many of my dear readers which means many too are now Mums, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents or like me suffering a growing “serial-baby-snatching” issue.
I have always made a point of avoiding posting on child specific products and brands as we all know, that unless you are “up to” that stage in your life, this content is boring and irrelevent. SO…I decided to make a whole new blog just for those people!

Junior’s aims to fill a niche in our part of the internet world by offering kids and family based content exclusively focussed on New Zealand and Australian designers/brands/makers and creatives. You can expect new content on a daily basis (weekdays) and a growing archive of FOCUS posts where we invite interesting experts/visitors/personalities to inspire, teach us some stuff and hopefully offer a few “lightbulb” moments!

I will only ever occasionally share Junior’s content with you here and only if it is really relevant to you and the Studio Home vibe. I hope I’ve created a spot that you can happily graduate to at some stage but please, we love you here, so don’t leave forever!

This only happened for the sole reason that you have given me the guts to follow my bloggy instincts by continually supporting what I try to do here.

That beautiful illustration was made especially for Junior’s by loooong time Studio Home fave babe; Emma Leonard. And once again, the quick working pro Mickey Ross of Micimage gave me a clean, easy to use and nice looking site. So THANKS to you guys soon.

Enough with the novel! – I welcome you to come check Junior’s out.

Ju xoxo

Micimage – Queenstown Wedding

Micimage - Mickey Ross Wanaka Wedding Photographer, New ZealandYou might recognise the name Micimage as the one responsible for the building of two Studio Home websites. The man behind the brand is Mickey Ross and yes, while I vouch for his skills at bringing a site to life and even his all round talent behind the camera – it is a new and exciting thing to be able to present you with one of his weddings.

He has a distinct candid, documentary style and a knack for capturing real moments and uncontrived emotion. You can check out the rest of this beautiful Queenstown wedding and bear witness to the fact that sideways rain and hurricane force wind (well almost!) didn’t dampen the spirits of this party!

You can have a look at the rest of Mickey’s recent wedding work and his contact deets should you want to chat with him.

A couple of days later, Mickey returned to Queenstown and joined the pair for a fair weather flight to a mountain top for some extra pics with a breathtaking backdrop!

My Dream Team

Dream-team The prospect of refreshing a brand identity and website is both exciting and terrifying. For an internet wanderer like myself, exposed to SO many terrific (and terrible) examples of design online daily – the task of creating a new look and improved website to take Studio Home forward seemed kind of mammoth.  While I had some very firm ideas about layout and the general “vibe” I was after, I certainly didn’t have the skill base to bring it to life on my own!

So I engaged Mickey Ross from Micimage who originally took me from Blogger to a new WordPress platform in late 2010. Mickey has an amazing aesthetic and eye as a designer and I totally respect his techno geekiness when it comes to all things coding! I then cold called graphic designer and creative; Loz Ferguson of Pop Creative after seeing examples of her work popping up on Facebook. I loved her style and knew that she was a reader…essentially I had her in my sights as someone to translate my ideas but also as a true partner and sounding board in the process. And that she most definitely was!

Both Mickey and Loz are based in Wanaka, South Island, NZ so this whole project was completed using shared Pinterest boards, group emails and long fantastic collaborative Skype sessions. Going into the project I wondered if the distance between our physical locations would affect the process…..all I can say is that using the internet as our shared office was incredibly convenient and productive! There was no scheduling of weekly “presentations in person” … Loz and I would simply flick updates, ideas and feedback via Skype to each other during the day. We could work through concepts real time, allowing her to do some tweaks while I sat at my own computer researching a font etc. Screen shots ricocheted back and forth like lightening and sideways to Mickey if we needed some clarification on some of our grander ideas. The same was done sending concepts out to chosen friends for feedback – resulting in instant critique and allowing us to move forward much much faster than I had expected.

With my own experience as proof I would recommend this way of working to anyone who spends a lot of time connected to their computer. I certainly couldn’t recommend more, the services and skills of Pop Creative and Micimage. Hey – doesn’t matter if you are in Auckland, Adelaide or Atlanta, these two may just be the design professionals for you! Below is a brief intro to my dream team:

POP CREATIVE – Loz Ferguson

Pop CreativePictured here are a few images of some recent work from Pop Creative. Loz not only has a growing branding portfolio she has also lent her creative brain to wedding invites, collateral and custom signage. She has only recently set up as an independent and with work flooding in the doors she hasn’t yet had a chance to get her own site up! You can check out all her work and find her contact info on her Facebook page.Pop Creative - recent branding work

Micimage – Mickey Ross

Micimage - Mickey RossMicimage - Mickey RossMickey Ross might understand that mysterious language of html coding but there is no way he can be pigeon holed as a techno geek! A talented designer in his own right he is also an award winning photographer and in demand film maker. His instagram feed is one of my all time favourites and gives me massive wanderlust with every new post.
