TEAM.WORK: Studio Home x Trestle Union Take Two!

NEW Matte Gold finish pot plant stand. A collaboration between Trestle Union x Studio Home // New Zealand - available online // Shot by and featured on Studio Home - creative brands from the lands down under

I’m SO happy to bring you this follow up to the product that kicked off the TEAM.WORK collaboration project!
Just 18 months ago I met with designers Mike Grobelny and Nikolai Sorenson of Trestle Union and floated the idea of pot plant stands. In true form, they knocked around some ideas, experimented with prototypes and arrived at a design which is distinctly true to both of our brands and has proved to be a favourite for many of you. It has been super satisfying to see the stands popping up in your homes and spaces over the last year and our brains have continued to whir with ideas on developing the them further!

While there are many more still marinating, we are really excited to present our new Matte Gold finish stand. This is the same height as our other medium stands but this time, instead of a shiny finish of clear coat, we wanted to offer something less glossy, more textural and rich for those looking for that patina in their homes.

There is a softness and nod to a vintage vibe with the new colour (my personal favourite) and the finish is designed to wear over time adding to its industrial appeal.

You can purchase the stand online at Trestle Union and online/instore at Tessuti.

Pop down the bottom of the post to find out how to WIN A STAND FOR YOU AND ONE TO GIVE AS A PRESSIE!

……

It’s with huge pleasure that I FINALLY get to share with you the debut project in my new TEAM.WORK collaboration series. The idea behind this was to create an avenue to ramp up Studio Home’s involvement with exciting NZ/AUS creative talent AND have fun working together to produce products specifically created with YOU in mind!

SO! First up!

Many of you will remember young Auckland designers Mike Grobelny and Nikolai Sorensen from the feature I ran on them and their new popular business; Trestle Union. Their plan of supplying well made trestle tables at accessible pricing paid off and despite both working in other design based jobs their business is growing and so are their ideas!

After the first of many lunch meetings we came up with the plan to create a product that was not only new for them but something that I personally have been hunting for FOREVER!
Brainstorming, sketching and prototyping ensued until we got here: our TEAM.WORK Pot Plant Stands which are minimal and subtle while still being something special and unique in their design!

Initially the collection is available exclusively here in the Trestle Union online store (although stockists will follow).
The stands can fit many different sizes of pot as the hexagonal ring at the top will support tapered designs while narrower vessels can balance on the central support which is also handy if you need a drip tray!
Available in three sizes and three powder coated, glossy finishes of white, black and clear to bring out the industrial raw effect of the metal wire. You can purchase these separately or as a handy set of three!
Shipping is free within NZ, a standard $35 (NZD) to Australia and we welcome any international inquiries just click through and drop us an email.

The beauty of collaborating is that the vibe can snowball!
When it came to the production of imagery and sharing this project I then reached out to some more terrific local talent. Photographer Evie Mackay jumped on board to shoot (perfectly!!) the imagery you see here and Eden Hessel of The Botanist came to the party to not only supply the awesome array of pot plants and foliage but also to be a major factor in the styling.
What’s more, earlier in the year I had visited the great space of the young creative visionaries who run the Fuzzy Vibes gallery on K Road and pocketed it away as a super special location for a shoot. Little did I imagine I would be sending an email asking as sweetly as possible if I could use it for my own project! They not only let us run amok for a few hours they supplied the most ridiculously interactive little cat to join in!

So. TEAM.WORK is officially in action! (deep breath!)

The Trestle Union

Fisher & Paykel Cooking AppliancesThe Trestle Union, Auckland, NZ - by Studio HomFrom left: The Trestle Union – Nikolai Sorensen and Mike Grobelny in the AUT workshop.
……

While I can’t remember the first time I came across The Trestle Union, I do still remember the momentary thrill at finding furniture designed and made in NZ that I could actually afford! Un surprisingly, accessibility was definitely a motivating factor when two savvy product design students from AUT knocked heads and decided to give a business a whirl.

Trestle Union is as fluid and forward thinking as its two young designers which meant that my afternoon of interviewing made for some pretty cool location visits which you can see below!

Nikolai Sorensen, 29,  studied architecture at Unitec but on graduating was offered a role within an engineering company. Despite the pretty terrific opportunities for travel, it became evident to him after a few years that he was limited in moving forward in the industry due to not having an engineering degree.
It was in 2009 while attending his wife; Johanna’s Spatial Design exhibition at AUT that he got a burst inspiration! He realised that he was after a balance between engineering and art and promptly scraped together a portfolio, booking himself a space in the Bachelor Design course majoring in Product.

Mike Grobelny is a 30 year old Masters student and workshop technician at AUT. After a few years travel following his degree in product design at Unitec, Mike returned to Auckland to take up the workshop tech role in 2008 and began his Masters study in 2010. When I caught up with him last year he was in the middle of reasearching and writing his thesis based on the “barriers and opportunities faced by product design graduates when trying to commercialise a product”
(joining the dots now?)

The young designers met in the workshop and Mike “knocked up” a table for Nikolai. The demand for cool but affordable trestles were apparent to the pair as friends constantly requested them, and on research – there appeared to be none fitting price AND style online.
So they decided to collaborate and do something a little more formal. Nikolai had a design for a “higher end” trestle table which they built and photographed. The images went up on his tumblr which he used as portfolio site and next thing they knew it went seriouslt viral! The table became the number on image and search for trestle legs!

The cogs started turning again and they decided to launch the Trestle Union – focusing not on high end product, but on accessible and affordable design to meet, what they discovered, was a very real demand. Their first table was sold to top NZ landscape architect; Xanthe White and they have enjoyed a steady rise in custom from there. Their collection offers simple options in tops, legs, heights and sizes which they have made sure can be bought seperately for convenience . Largely avoiding wholesale contracts to keep prices low and margins under control, they are working proof that web based sales for furniture is both possible and well received.

When I visited, Mike and Nikolai were producing their range from two spaces. This project in production was directly related to Mike’s research for his thesis and AUT, in what is an incredibly supportive move, allowed them to get the wheels turning by using the workshop after hours. Late last year the guys then began to buy equipment and slowly kit out a rural building on the farm owned by Nikolai’s in-laws near Murawai. I was lucky enough to take the drive out there and loved the huge juxtaposition between the florescent, lab-like vibe of the uni workshop and the wooden hut cradled by native bush.
Its simply brilliant and to me, pure start up NZ!

With Nikolai’s graduation in late 2013 and Mike on the last leg of his Masters, the team continue to fill orders and are in the process of prototyping new products in their Trestle Union style (you are going to want to stay tuned for these!) Both manage their own freelance projects and while looking onward at their individual design goals, for the time being Trestle Union allows them a great link to the industry and invaluable experience with the commercial realities of design production locally.

I’m really looking forward to what this pair have to offer, both as the Tresle Union team and as independant, modern designers in their own right.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE TRESTLE UNION:
It is 100% possible to design and manufacture affordable furniture in NZ!
Oh and – being young, full of ideas, awesome problem solvers and total go getters helps.

The Trestle Union

Trestle Union

The Trestle Union is a new Auckland based brand that have made it their mission to bring the simple, functional beauty of the humble trestle table to the masses. Offering complete table sets in ply and glass you can also go for their snappy little shelving unit or even just a pair of legs. As a loyal trestle table owner myself, I’m excited to watch the Trestle Union liberating offices and homes around the country.

Break it down

Lake Pukaki and Mt Cook, New Zealand by Julia Atkinson for Studio Home I really hope you are staring down the barrel of some GREAT down time over the next few weeks!
For the first time in years I have decided to take a real proper digital holiday,  meaning no posts or social media activity until the 11th of Jan (we’ll see if I can stick to that!)
I’m going to be spending Christmas and New Year in the Southern Lakes followed by the rest of January in Christchurch and surrounds …… getting used to my “soon to be” permanent base!
Yes! Change is a foot!

Once back you can expect the release of my February dates for North Island workshops in Tauranga, Hamilton, Napier and Auckland (South Island coming in March) as well as the announcement of NEW informative classes we’ll be hosting to aid small business. Coming hot on those heels we will introduce some new TEAM.WORK collaborations  (which I’m super excited about!) as well as a richer, better direction for the delivery of great down under content for you!

However….you may also be here hoping for some holiday perusing.
Well never fear, there is 8 whole years of introductions sitting here on Studio Home that will still be of interest to you.

YOU COULD:

– Explore our back catalogue of interviews telling the stories of creative Kiwi’s and Aussies on both sides of the Tasman. These fall under the Creative HQ and Fly The Coop categories and also, not to forget the local NZ interviews by Sarah Allen aimed to dredge up wisdom for students and graduates. Browse the Real World series here.

– Browse and make use of the categories listed down the left hand column. Click on Art, Interior Design,  For the Home, Jewellery etc to get specific on the posts that interest you.

– Want to get reallllly specific? Use our search bar located near the top of the side column. Enter brand names, locations or keywords to get into the nitty gritty. For example – “cushions“, “bedlinen”, “Trestle Union“, “Wellington“….go for it!

– Interested in children and family specific product?
Welllll, while Junior’s has been on “pause” of late there is still a large back catalogue of NZ/AUS brands, products and kids specific content sitting there for your to browse in all the same ways as I suggest above.
The exciting news is that Junior’s will be relaunching with a new owner and exciting schedule of content early in 2016!

– Maybe you’d like to trawl through our Studio Home and Junior’s Pinterest accounts ?

Have an AWESOME couple of weeks and I’ll see you back here soon all fresh and rejuvenated like! I really value your visits and support!!

XO Ju
