STREET WALKING: foraged flower ideas

Street foraged foliage and ideas on what to do with it! Like the other posts, I used product I scoped at Farmers as inspiration.
I am BIG on ramshackle, casual, “artfully” thrown together still lifes. I’m the sort of person that uses nice drinking glasses as vases more often then not – so with this in mind I trawled the aisles of Farmers looking for a collection of simple and detailed glassware in different but attractive shapes and forms. This then spurred on the resulting floral experimentation!
You can have a trawl through their huge range of vases and glassware here.

We stalked around, hawk eyes trained on anything of interest peeping around corners or draping over fences. With no real plan in mind of the vibe, it was more about what was available and obviously in season in terms of flowers!

Our haul was then dragged back to Lucy’s studio, cleaned up a little then lined up in front of our collection of glassware.

FORAGED STILL LIFE

Our first project was to create a still life using the majority of what we had found. I love big collections like this that look impressive taking up a sideboard, or clustered on top of a book shelf. They are definitely the type of set ups that enjoy having their “back to the wall”, particularly if you have a wayward larger branch that might need to lean on it!

We liked how this looked but there was scope for more!

MINIMAL

Another of my favourites is getting SUPER MINIMAL on the actual arranging and instead stick with just one variety of flower or foliage, separating them among a few vessels or better yet, celebrating its form by simply popping it into its own vase with simply nothing else.
Beautiful , pared back and un-contrived.

RAMSHACKLE ARRANGEMENT

Lastly we pulled all the finds back together and Lucy created a large, perfectly imperfect arrangement.
I LOVED how it looked rough and ready and totally decadent all at once!

Again – don’t be distracted by “what” plants we used, instead use this as a starting point to strike out and see what you can find near you!
ENJOY YOUR FLORAL ADVENTURES!

Lush Bedside Posie

Growing up my Mum always made sure we had a posie of cut flowers on the kitchen table and beside our beds – even now when I head home to visit there will be some little sweet smelling gaggle of flowers waiting for me in my room.

Spurred on by this memory and inspired by the awesome “Tilly at Home” geometric rose vase and bedroom building homeware I had discovered at Farmers, I challenged clever Lu Diamond to create a posie using flowers bought from the dairy down the road.

Having not always had the luxury of living in a place where masses of fresh cut flowers are available year round, I encourage you to hunt out what you have at your own finger tips – this posie could alternatively be leafier, greener and perhaps contain more foraged, one off blooms that peep over your neighbours fence!

COLOUR BLOCKING

I have ALWAYS tried to create posies by painstakingly attempting to mix all the flowers together evenly.
Lucy shuns this with beautiful results! Let colours block and different varieties sit together.

EVEN UNEVENNESS

My obsession for a balanced perfectly, symmetrical floral symphony has also been put to rest with the realisation that off-centre arrangements look modern, romantic and imperfectly perfect.

CUT + TRIM AS YOU GO

I’ve always cut and trimmed the stems of my flowers to prepare them for arranging, however, while Lucy did clean up the stalks she left any decisions on length for later. She would hold clutches of blooms up against what she had already done, testing angles and placement before THEN trimming their length to sit perfectly.
Its not rocket science but it was a real Ohhhhhh moment.

GET DOWN AT THE SAME LEVEL

We were definitely striving to create an arrangement that could be viewed from all angles but I noticed that Lucy was constantly ducking and divine to get eye level with what she was working on which posed a good point!
This posie would have looked great on a kitchen table or sideboard in a living room, both of which have you suddenly dropping to view it at the same or sometimes even lower level.

Foraged Posie for table setting

Foraged posie for table setting by Lu Diamond Flowers with Studio Home / Plates, cutlery and placemat from Farmers: Your Department Store / Photography by Julia Atkinson for Studio HomeSo this is something new!
Over the next three weeks I’ll be sharing 3 little projects that the clever Lu Diamond and I joined forces on in partnership with Farmers to celebrate their fresh new seasons collection (which to be honest…reallllly impressed me!) You will spot some of our favourite Farmers products in each shoot all of which were the basis of inspiration for each of our floral creations.
As a SERIAL “forager” (some may refer to this as foliage poaching) I wanted to create some posts around the ease at which you can use easy-to-access foliage and flowers in your own home.

Rather than writing you a recipe of “this plant and that tree”, instead we wanted to inspire you with what is possible using the vegetation that you have on your own street!

You will be SO surprised at how those seemingly boring trees/plants/buds/seed heads/ferns/grasses/weeds look when layered and bound simply with rough twine!

Enjoy! (next week we are using flowers bought from the local dairy to create an awesome posie for beside your bed!)
