Nook – Brisbane

Nook, Brisbane, Australia - photos by Julia Atkinson for Studio HomeI think it was the infinite networking ability of Facebook that introduced me to a little store in Brisbane called Nook. So when I landed in southern Queensland for my two month stint, Michelle Gillies and her gorgeous shop shot straight to the top of my “must visit” list!

And as you can see ( I don’t think my pics quite do it justice!) Nook truly is a creative haven connecting independant Australasian makers and more with eager and receptive visitors. There were lots of familiar brands that I have blogged over the years, but so many more that I didn’t even know about. Michelle most definitely has her finger on the pulse!

Anyone visiting Brisbane should most definitely make an effort to check it out (and visit the MOST delicious Cafe Wrapture just around the corner!!)

Thanks for having me Michelle!

Signed and Numbered

Signed and Numbered, Degraves St, Melbourne - photography by Studio HomeJacqui Vidal in front of the Degraves St. Signed and Numbered store
…….

On my most recent trip to Melbourne in November, I FINALLY got to meet the creative dynamo that is Jacqui Vidal of Signed and Numbered. I have followed the progress of her business for years now, so I jumped at the opportunity to hide from some unseasonably shocking weather in her new Degraves St store.

With two Melbourne bricks’n’mortar outlets and a terrific online store, Signed and Numbered not only puts the work of independant artists in front of a large and receptive customer base, they have also been single handedly responsible for spring boarding many careers.
It was through Signed and Numbered online that I was first introduced to Kareena Zerefos Kelly Smith and Bec Winnel, artists I obsessively follow. But I’ll admit that getting to flick through the perspex dividers packed with print after print of work from new and known artists was a total buzz.
If I lived in Melbourne I would be a regular for sure – visitors it really probably needs to be on your “to do ” list!

Juliette Hogan – Britomart

Juliette Hogan - Britomart, Auckland, New Zealand - photography by Studio HomeThis Store Front post is an extension of the Creative HQ feature I did with Juliette Hogan back in October. I actually shot this beautiful shop the same day I visited her studio… but that post was going to be a monster if all was included so two parts seemed wise!

While many of you reading will be familiar with Britomart and most likely the JHO store, for those of you not – this waterfront area of downtown Auckland has seen an incredible rejuvination over the last 6 years and an influx of eager brands keen to take up tenancy. Despite its incredibly central location, for years it seemed unable to shed its dingy, industrial vibe. Now it buzzes with awesome public spaces, food outlets, bars and yes, some great shopping as you can see!

As you can see from the pics, the Juliette Hogan store continues her signature casual but luxe aesthetic and I was MORE than willing to kick around in there enjoying the calm, cool and those leather chairs!

Tiny Bird – Avalon, Sydney

Tiny Bird, Avalon, Sydney - by Studio HomeLucky for me artist; Lisa Lapointe was working the day I visited Tiny Bird.
Double whammy!
……

A month or so ago I was on a whirlwind trip to Sydney for completely non-blog related activites and enjoying a very welcome introduction to beautiful Avalon and the Northern Beaches. But on discovering the aptly named “tiny” store; Tiny Bird I did some very fast talking and owner; Sonja Stubbs kindly let me whip out my camera and snap some pics on 2 minutes notice!

What made the store really stand out for me was their selection. With super easy access of really ANYTHING online now, stores have needed to diversify their offerings – hunt further, curate better and create a culture and unique recipe that has us wanting to visit!! In my opinion Sonja has nailed it.
As a seasoned (some say obsessed) internet traveller there was SO much goodness sourced from all over the world that I had never come across and it all jigsawed perfectly together.

They have some of their range online for those of you unlikely to visits but seriously…I’d put lovely Avalon and Tiny Bird down as another reason to visit Sydney. Soon.

The Fabric Store – Auckland

…..

To be honest I don’t have much business being in a fabric store. I can appreciate and admire beautiful fabric with the best of them and make a cushion cover if I really have to…but the art of clothing construction just doesn’t live in me. My Mum and sister on the other hand are super talented with the sewing machine – and it was on their recent visit to Auckland that I found myself ferrying them on request to The Fabric Store.

I knew instantly that this was no dowdy haberdashery! The staff were young and funky, the fit-out was super creative, amazing art took pride of place on the walls and that isn’t even mentioning the truly awesome array of fabric on offer! I visited again a couple of days later with my camera and learnt some more about this cool NZ company.
Some kiwi’s might remember it under its former name of Global Fabrics with four stores across the country. Over the past 5 years they have moved to fill gap in the international market by opening stores in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and just recently;  Los Angeles! Go team!

Father Rabbit

Father Rabbit at BLOC - Studio HomeA few months ago I shared the quaint, white washed villa that Father Rabbit claimed as his suburban Auckland HQ. Well…in the last few weeks some serious changes have taken place, seeing Claudia ZinZan and Nick Hutchinson move the rabbit to a new lofty and modern corner of BLOC in Mt Eden.
With its beginnings as a small but immaculately curated online store, Father Rabbit has grown a cult following for all those valuing practical but beautiful products…something that they have mastered the art of sourcing.
Recently they added a “guest room” to their retail concept with the introduction of a new character; Hello My Tropical Princess Bird Friend” and with some serious design genius, they have managed to bring her and her rainbow range with them to the new open plan store – but without any disruption to their signature serene aesthetic.
Check out the (lengthy!) pictorial tour below and what they have been up to. This stunner of a store is OPEN for business at BLOC and of course, always online.
