Homestyle: behind the scenes

hind the scenes of editorial shoot - by Studio HomeGetting to hang around behind the scenes of an editorial shoot is something I’ve always wanted to tick off the list. Seriously – haven’t you ever cast a thought as to how those glossy, styled magazine stories come to life? I have many a time but as with most things…I had seriously underestimated the work that goes in!

The Homestyle team let me hang around while they created three very awesome and very different scenes for their Dec-Jan Issue. The three of them took to their corners of Flash StudiosΒ (the base of photographer; Melanie Jenkins) and armed with their plan, a tonne of beautiful sourced product and a tight tight time frame they got to work. Anyone who has designed anything will know that the process of bringing a plan on paper to life in a 3 dimensional sense needs to be handled with flexibility and patience. A great deal of tweaking, re-positioning and experimentation is involved with the only right answer lying in the detailed eye of the maker and her team.

Below you will see some of the process shots I caught a peek at the final result AND a pretty awesome giveaway!!

It was humbling to watch and a big thanks to the team for having me there.
The clever people at play were:
Alice Lines; Editor
Amber Armitage; Senior Designer/Stylist
Sophie Peacocke; Designer
Melanie Jenkins; Photographer atΒ Flash Studios.

    Homes renovated on a budget

  4. Prabhleen Ahuja says:

Would love to see DIY solutions to home renovation and renovation projects on a budget. It is always interesting to see beautifully decorated homes of everyday people…and to hear their stories of how the acquired the furniture and accessories in their houses. It is also interesting to read about new artists, home ware stores and off course where to get the best deals!

  5. Would love to see more NZ architecture featured

  6. Ali Hughes says:

I’d love to see more features on people living in rentals/rental-friendly diy projects. A house of our own is out of our reach at the moment and its a bit of a challenge making a rental your own when landlords can be funny about holes in the walls and paint! It’d be great to see how others go about making their borrowed properties reflect who they are/their style.

  7. Mel says:

great prize – my subscription just ran out with the latest issue too!!

I love product round up pages, always leads to new store finds!
NZ spaces (on smaller budgets are always good too, everyday people stuff rather than flashy expensive architectural rennos)
and the blogs we love page too – can never have too many awesome design blogs to check

  8. Danelle says:

Ohhh I would love to see more NZ spaces – especially on smaller budgets. And small business studio spaces would be amazing to see too. Renovations – before and afters – those would be cool to see more of.

Definitely more NZ spaces – not just homes, inspiration from commercial/retails settings too. And from regional NZ – movers and shakers from the wop wops πŸ˜‰

  11. Emma says:

Feature NZ artists with their homely products!

  12. more insights into creative peoples homes for example a shoe maker and where/how he lives.. also maybe cover some neat food and health blogs? <3

  15. rose says:

I definitely second a feature of people living in rental properties that manage to make them amazing. The article on Gemma of Black Bird was super inspiring. It’s taken with such incredible attention to detail – absolutely breathtaking!

  18. Manja Brinkman says:

I love the Homestyle vibe! I would love to see more of how to achieve that look on a budget. I love a regular article with an expensive room and then a recreated room with the more budget friendly items, locally sourced to achieve a similar look and ambience.

  19. jane says:

Features on local artists would be great

  20. Miriam says:

Love homestyle mag, it’s my go to for inspiration. We”ve just built, and homestyle has helped us, find our style. NZ homes and style on modest budgets are inspiration in the current climate. DIY and how to start from a blank canvas! Outdoor spaces would be fab too!

  37. Amanda Henriksen says:

I love product round ups and I’d love more of them please.

I definitely agree with some of the comments about seeing more homes done on a more modest budget, as style is something which can’t just be bought. And more profiles on creative New Zealanders.

  42. Sarah says:

I LOVE Homestyle mag! I always love a good before and after feature, especially those done cleverly on a modest budget. Creative studios would be great to see more of too. Perhaps a shop/home feature, as a lot of cool shops seem to have equally cool owners/homes, whether rented or owned. Great giveaway, fingers crossed!

  46. Stacey Wesley says:

I love all the articles, Would love to see some more cool updo ideas of vintage stuff, And some funky kids deco ideas.

  47. Liv says:

My fave features are always product roundups and peeks into beautiful NZ homes but it would be cool to see some lovely NZ shops too!

perhaps NZ artists? Or maybe the cheap landscape fixes? love your mag tho, is great as is

Homestyle is my fav mag, its fresh, accessible and hip. I would love it monthly! I miss the renovation/build costs, they added some context to the project and whether it was accessible for you or not. Thanks

  59. Jane Dalton says:

I’ve actually only had the chance to read Homestyle once when a kiwi friend bought it with them to stay with us in Australia and was so impressed by the beautiful content! Perhaps a suggestion would be adding more Australian homes to the mix?

  60. marlar boon says:

Rental renos please. Nz furniture designers and product. Ohh nothing quite like bedding and textile recommendations! x

  61. Melissa says:

I would love to see more sneak peaks into homes and the process of renos too. And some inspiring retail spaces would be great.

  62. Aimee Rendell says:

I would love to see ideas for working with a room that doesn’t have a lot of natural light. Lots of rooms profiled always seem to be light-filled but not all rooms are like that. Also ideas for dealing with large blank walls – both high and low end budgets would be awesome. Oh and unusual-shaped rooms. It would be cool to see how people deal with rooms that aren’t easy spaces to start with.

  63. Sarah says:

Love product round ups. Also inspiring home spaces, not necessarily NZ, but certainly which fit with what we can do and find here. I also love reading about the people behind wonderful design, NZ focus on this would be great. Ps. Super prize πŸ™‚

  64. Haley says:

Keep doing what they are doing ! Ive been following Homestyle for some time now and recently it has started moving in much more interesting directions – well done! Id love to see more shops, more creatives and their spaces (esp studios etc ) and I agree with the rentals thing.
Also I really appreciate the design direction – like the imagery above is going in. I think they are on the right road! πŸ™‚
