Josh Miels

I’m a mega fan of Josh Miels and his mind boggling portraits which I discovered through Facebook over a year ago. I’m stoked to have him as the first official participant of this project and hope you guys enjoy the insight into his environment as much as I do.

WHAT: Home and studio for both art and graphic design. Working from home gives me an opportunity to have a substantial veggie garden, when i’m frustrated I head out into the garden.

WHERE: I live in Glenelg; South Australia, down near the beach. Its a great place to run a studio from home. There always something happening just a small walk away.

WHO: My studio consists of myself and my partner Madeleine. Madeleine is very much into her photography while I like to paint. We own a small marionette and we make use with the little space we have to operate all things creative. My best friend is Sushi, a black British Shorthair. All she does all day is sleep on my desk as I work, that’s until 5pm comes along and she turns into the cat from hell right up until I feed her, then she’s relaxed and back to sleep again.

DESCRIPTION: My name is Josh Miels. I am a Graphic Designer/Artist.  My art really focuses on portraiture. I love face’s and emotions. I paint from life and from photos. I usually have models come over and  we do a series of photos in all areas of the house, as I don’t have a huge budget for my art  yet I utilise all areas I can. The bathroom and kitchen seem to get the best natural light, whilst the middle room (studio area) seems to be the best place to control light. I am in the early stages in my art career as I am still learning new things on a daily basis, mostly by trial and error. My artistic style is forever changing as I just like to try new things and techniques. The only thing that seems to be constant in my work is that I love painting people. There is something about trying to capture the human face that I love. Hopefully in the future I will have more time to really develop as an artist…

I love these little insights into the worlds of the creative! I especially like that Sushi sounds just like Hoebag at 5pm!
