Welcome to the second in our series of three little posts to inspire your floral creativity!
Growing up my Mum always made sure we had a posie of cut flowers on the kitchen table and beside our beds – even now when I head home to visit there will be some little sweet smelling gaggle of flowers waiting for me in my room.
Spurred on by this memory and inspired by the awesome “Tilly at Home” geometric rose vase and bedroom building homeware I had discovered at Farmers, I challenged clever Lu Diamond to create a posie using flowers bought from the dairy down the road.
We chose to visit the closest dairy to Lucy’s studio which was on Ponsonby Road in Auckland. Having not always had the luxury of living in a place where masses of fresh cut flowers are available year round, I encourage you to hunt out what you have at your own finger tips – this posie could alternatively be leafier, greener and perhaps contain more foraged, one off blooms that peep over your neighbours fence!
The tips I learnt myself from watching Lucy work were:
I have ALWAYS tried to create posies by painstakingly attempting to mix all the flowers together evenly.
Lucy shuns this with beautiful results! Let colours block and different varieties sit together.
My obsession for a balanced perfectly, symmetrical floral symphony has also been put to rest with the realisation that off-centre arrangements look modern, romantic and imperfectly perfect.
CUT + TRIM AS YOU GO
I’ve always cut and trimmed the stems of my flowers to prepare them for arranging, however, while Lucy did clean up the stalks she left any decisions on length for later. She would hold clutches of blooms up against what she had already done, testing angles and placement before THEN trimming their length to sit perfectly.
Its not rocket science but it was a real Ohhhhhh moment.
GET DOWN AT THE SAME LEVEL
We were definitely striving to create an arrangement that could be viewed from all angles but I noticed that Lucy was constantly ducking and divine to get eye level with what she was working on which posed a good point!
This posie would have looked great on a kitchen table or sideboard in a living room, both of which have you suddenly dropping to view it at the same or sometimes even lower level.
