Curtis Wedding – Marlborough Sounds

Curtis Wedding Furneaux Lodge - Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. Photos by Julia Atkinson for Studio HomeThe morning cracked the best sunniest smile possible which had as alllll breathing a sigh of relief! I creeped over to spy on my wee sister bride and caught her going over her vows which was rather special. We then covered her in towel camouflage to bolt along the foreshore (past the grooms cottage) to the jetty where we had jacked up some cousins, a boat and waterski’s for the bride to take a turn on the absolute silky calm of the bay! This is something we had wanted to happen sooooo badly right from the beginning of plans to have her wedding in the Sounds, so for it to be picture perfect – well that was the first of many special moments in the day!

Photos by Julia Atkinson for Studio HomeAfter her compulsary ski the bride then swanned around in the sun and her robe (!) drinking copious amounts of tea with her many girlfriends and being just really (some remarked ridiculously!) relaxed! Guests spent the morning walking, canoeing, swimming and generally taking advantage of an isolated mini break at Furneaux Lodge!

I headed into the marquee where there were a gaggle of helpful and talented ladies around to finish the last of the decoration.
Caroline’s good school friend; Briar Redfern (Tauranga based florist) “built” the bouquets and button holes with our collected flowers from the bay and a few additions of jasmine bought over by a family friend. And my clever Aunt Bindy used the remaining flowers to construct a series of big, beautiful arrangements for the food tables.

Aside from the secondhand collection of pottery vessels, Simon and Caroline had a few cool and personalised ideas of their own. On the back wall they roughly stuck circles of instagram pics that they had had printed the year before and used as their very simple invitations. These were so much fun for people to look through and tied in beautifully with the circle of images showing both sets of parents in their wedding photos and childhood pics of the two.

They had also spent MONTHS at home in Australia making origami animals out of pages from an old Atlas which were then grouped at each place seating. I had taken photos of these and we had laid them out on a large piece of paper signify each table and guests names beside them. When they first told me of this idea I had thought ” ech! is that a little gimmickey?!” but it turned out to be a massive hit! The maps were a lovely soft green and cream which slid in seamlessly to the really pared back and natural decoration. Guests had to spend a while identifying the animal they had been listed under and there were some amazing coincidences of the maps used actually relating to the homeland of that guest!! Pretty bizarre as only tables were indicated…not guest per seat.

Photos by Julia Atkinson for Studio HomeAt lunchtime I made a beeline for Carolines cottage where I found her surrounded by a team of women all armed with combs. Turns out her fishtail braid that she had waterskiied had subsequently got absolutely well and truly matted together and Mum even had to pull out the scissors to weed through the mess! THAT was the first time I saw a prickle of anxiousness in the sisters eyes! haha!

……

Knowing always that the isolation of the venue meant that we were going to be without a make up and hair team we had planned a head. Late last year when Caroline was over and in Auckland for her hen’s party, we had booked in with the terrific team at Mecca Cosmetica in Newmarket. We explained the need for nice but “do-able by an amateaur” make up and were taken through an terrific lesson with Caroline splashing out to buy the product and tools we needed. (A few have asked – lips were NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Damned) On the day Caroline did her own and I did mine and Steph’s.

The week before heading to the Sounds we had then met with good friend and hair whisperer; Katrina Nurse for a lesson which was paretty hilarious but using our notes and many opinons (!) we were able to direct Mum and great family friend and former hairdresser; Donna on how to wrangle our mops into the soft look we were gunning for!

Another worthy mention was the fragrance worn by all of us (and guests received a sample too!) by ABEL Organics – a 100% organic perfume newly developed by Caroline’s Amsterdam based friends. You can’t “see” how beautiful it was but considering the couple and the location it was the invisible cherry on the top!

Lastly, the most crucial part to the girls attire was the divine wedding dress made by my sisters super talented friend; Caroline Campion. Caroline ( I know its confusing!) was a week out from launching her business and debut bridal collection, so it was incredibly exciting that dress number 1 was for such a long time girlfriend!

The ceremony was just as you see here – intimate, funny, emotional and perfect for the both of them. Their mutual, great friend Nick Clements officiated the marriage perfectly which was even more significant as he was the one who had first introduced them…
The other point to note was that the bridal party was all family. I was joined as bridesmaid by Simon’s sister Steph, while his two brothers David and Pete made up the man line up. It was really nice and again, a move that gave us all a terrific bond.

The bridal party then headed off with another of my sisters great friends; emerging wedding photographer Deborah Foote! Deb was the pinnacle of awesome in her ability to move us quickly through locations, capturing fun and beautiful moments all with an eye on the clock and our need to get back to the guests for the REAL wedding business!
You get treated to the full line up of her pics tomorrow!

Photo by Camilla Stoddart for Studio HomeThe remainder of the day and lonnnng brilliant evening were just as the images show here. Lots of laughter and fun and silliness shared by so many family and friends to form what really is now; a new family and friends.

The location and staff at Furneaux Lodge were absolutely without fault!! There was nothing we were left wanting for and NOTHING was a problem for their friendly crew. Couldn’t really recommend them more if I tried…

Tomorrow please check back here for the finale! Magnolia Rouge will be posting Deb’s full wedding story with specific details from my sister and then I have the great pleasure in presenting a pretty AWESOME giveaway which will interest many of you…not just those getting married!

Pre wedding – Marlborough Sounds

Bay of Many Coves- Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. Photos by Julia Atkinson for Studio Home“Miritu” – Bay of Many Coves, Marlborough Sounds, South Island. NZ.
……

So this is the first of 3 posts that I have put together to share the adventure of a wedding we had for my younger sister, Caroline and my new Tasmanian brother-in-law; Simon.
Caroline and Simon had decided on the beautiful Marlborough Sounds as the location for their nuptials for many reasons – this is where we have come for family holidays our whole lives, so many guests were travelling from so far it felt important to offer them the most special experience possible and well… C and S just like doing things a little differently.

I begin the story on our arrival to our holiday house in Bay of Many Coves, just 5 days out from the wedding. The bay is a 40 minute boat trip from Picton which always feels like an amazing buffer between real life and chilled out, holiday time. Although, of course on this occasion we had a pretty staunch list of jobs that needed ticking off each day!
We were joined over those days by all of Simon’s immediate family and absolutely relished sharing our treasured slice of heaven with them. It was a welcome period of bonding which truly set the scene for a super relaxed wedding.

Right from initial planning, Caroline and Simon wanted the vibe and decoration of their wedding to be super natural, drawing from the native bush of the Sounds and their shared love of the environment. We spent time bushwacking and fossacking for greenery that would resist wilting and struck gold with a rampant, wirey creeper. We picked bags and bags of this off the forest floor (some 3 days out from the actual wedding day) and then used it to line and drape everywhere we could string it in the marquee.
It was AMAZING stuff!!

Aside from the creeper we also needed to hunt for flowers and other vegetation to not only use in the vast collection of old pottery vases my sister had collected for the tables but also for the bouquets! Apart from from the bundle of gypsophila that my Mum had preciously protected in the car and boat all the way from her garden 6 hours south – we had nothing but crossed fingers that our loose plan would work.

To be honest, we nailed it! The seasonal timing of the wedding meant that we could tap into the massive hydrangea population that crowded around other little houses in the bay. We had our pick of soft water-coloury greys leaking to greens and for the bride, big white heads speckled with crimson that matched her lipstick perfectly! We also collected giant gum nuts off one big tree at our neighbours as a nod to the visiting Aussie contingent, as well as twisty branches kowhai, rata and more.

On Friday morning we packed up the families and boated another 30 minutes deeper into the Sounds to the wedding venue of Furneaux Lodge in Endeavour Inlet. Once again we were presented with dreamy summer weather, flat seas and the opportunity to impress our Taswegians even more!

Mum and Dads little cottage with the grass roof! There were so many levels of accommodation available that all the guests found something to fit their budget but will still so close to the action!

We set about decorating as much of the marquee as we could over that day. Friends were beginning to arrive and many leant valuable helping hands. I worked on arranging the greenery in the selection of pottery vases while teams worked on getting our creeper lining everything it could possibly line!

By late afternoon we had entirely prepped the tent with just the arranging of vases on tables and some small extras to go the next morning. We then joined all the guests who had dribbled in over the day for a big “night before” bbq on the veranda of the old Furneaux homestead and got to getting merry!

Tomorrow I’ll share my pics of the wedding day!
