New on the scene in both the cool mainstreet of Kingsland, Auckland as well as the burgeoning online space down under, is the Tonic Room!
After purchasing the original health store on site as a going concern in 2012, 29 year old naturopath; Katherine Lonsdale-Cooper has finally realised her dream of a space that takes natural medicine out of the slightly “hippy” arena and presents it in a way that the mainstream can appreciate, understand and relish visiting!
Opening doors to her new and improved store just over a week ago, today it is also joined by an extensive site to match that offers an impressive and lush version of a modern apothecary! Online and instore she has worked hard to source the best natural treats for the mind and body. Beauty brands like Jacqueline Evans Skincare, Triumph and Disaster, Herbivore Botanicals plus so many more! Trust me….divine!
But this isn’t just all about pretty smells and covetable labelling! The Tonic Room is staffed by fully trained naturopaths and nutritionists, allowing for the ability to provide trustworthy advice to walk in – walk out customers. Upstairs is a wellness clinic with an impressive team of full time practitioners in residence. These include naturapaths, holistic nutritionists, massage therapists, pyscho therapists and an intergrative doctor that have access to the full dispensary in store.
All in all it’s exciting to see this fresh innovator moving into the natural health industry. Determined to do things right, Kat chose creatives at the top of their game to bring Tonic Room to life – the talented and experienced agency of Hardhat are the brains behind the overall identity and website which has been complimented by the allllllways fresh Material Creative who were charged with the interior fit out.

Nothing like an attitude packed designer collab to get your Monday off on the right track. NZ interior design darlings; Material Creative are normally the hard working women behind the scenes of some of Aucklands most exciting hospitality and retail newcomers of late…but on this occasion they are headlining. They joined with new generation agency; Post Creative to claim a hole in the wall at the end of Durham Lane in Auckland city and set up Nice Day. The result is punchy, a little mysterious and for wandering inner city coffee seekers…very welcome!Photography by Jeremy Toth.
Material Creative took a swipe at another hospitality project and won…again. The images here (shot by Jeremy Toth) are from Marbecks Kitchen which opened in central Auckland late last year.
What do I love most about the results Olivia and Toni achieve? Their ability to always look past what is available to them in terms of the obvious materials, furnishings and surface coverings and simply be limited by only their own creativity. They painted the floor, they sourced their own second hand furniture and layered with ready made finishes that complimented their concept, not the other way around.
I am a big fan of Material Creative and with every new project, their deliciously quirky style is emerging. Little Nuffield is going to be a haven for all those exhausted Newmarket shoppers overcome with the rest of the streets offerings. It might be a tiny footprint, but Olivia and Toni have packed every square inch of the interior, branding and signage with attitude to boot. Can’t wait to visit!
