I can hardly believe it but my 2 month stint in Mt. Tamborine is coming to an end of Wednesday. NO idea where the time has gone but I have relished every second of this magical lush bit of the Gold Coast hinterland. In fact I found it so magnetic that I have done far less exploring of the region than I had planned….content instead on exploring my front doorstep instead.
For those of you that follow me on instagram you will have been inundated with my adventures and the hashtag #mttamborinecottage. Everything was so damn photogenic!
I am kind of breaking my own rules a little here in the sense that the Behind Closed Doors feature is aimed at profiling creative Kiwis and Aussies in their homes and spaces. This post definitely features two creative souls, however they are not officially working in your typical creative industries…but I just couldn’t resist.
During my week of zooming around the Gold Coast and beyond interviewing “said creatives” for Studio Home, I am based in a hidden piece of hilltop heaven with my younger sister Caroline and her Tasmanian fiance; Simon.
After collecting me from the airport we went for a quick dip at Burleigh then sped away from the coastal suburbs and wound up through lush forest and enclaves of farm land to the ridges of Mt. Tamborine.
I was greeted by burly, frog murdering Kookaburras, “large” spiders that find homes behind bedroom doors (argh!!) and the constant pulse of noise resonating from the tree tops and sub tropical rainforest across the road. Our lazy Sunday was drawn to an end thunder storm watching with wine in hand then a mad dash for cover when the Universe turned on the shower….big time.

WHO: Simon the NALH (Natural Areas Leading Hand) for the land management contractor Landscape Conservation and Caroline, psychologist working for Queensland Health. We have a menagerie of local wildlife which satisfies our cravings for pets.
WHAT: Our little shoebox is perfect for us at the moment. We are perched on a small mountain which provides us with green relief at the end of our working days in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. We ended up in Queensland, job hunting and broke after travelling around Australia and quickly escaped into the hinterland after a couple of days of full on urban camping on the Gold Coast. We liked it and found a cottage to rent.
WHERE: North Tamborine, a favourite weekend spot for weddings and Gold Coasters. It is adorned by national parks with waterfalls and rainforest and has no shortage of restaurants and shops. We like it as a central spot for exploring South East QLD, Northern NSW and it has easy access for us to visit friends and family in NZ and Tassie.
DESCRIPTION: Its a little cottage that easily accommodates our bit and pieces from our circumnavigation, as well as a smattering of second hand goods from various local sources. We came upon this little gem by perusing the local notices boards one weekend while passing through. Called the number, met the owners and the house and luckily were able to move in the very next day!
Some of the reasons why we enjoy this foresters cottage are waking to the calls of the Eastern Whip and Satin Bower birds on a Saturday sunrise. Fresh local fruit and coffee for breakfast enjoyed on the deck before going to the coast for a surf. Heading inland for a climb and mountain bike or simply cruising south for an explore.
In a diverse and varied landscape it can be difficult to find the right mix of things you like in life. But, I think we got it it right for the moment……….
